Choose a system that suits your home
Air-to-water: heating and hot water
An air-to-water heat pump transfers heat from outside air into a water-based heating system. It can supply suitable radiators or underfloor heating, with a compatible cylinder providing hot water for taps and showers.
The design needs to consider each room’s heat loss, the output of the radiators or underfloor heating, pipework and hot-water demand. Existing radiators may be suitable, but they need to be checked. Outdoor-unit position and cylinder space are part of the assessment too.
Air-to-air: heating and cooling through indoor units
Air-to-air heat pumps deliver warm air directly into rooms. Reversible systems can also provide cooling in warmer weather. Single-room and multi-room arrangements can suit living spaces, bedrooms and home offices, depending on the property and design.
These systems do not normally supply hot water for taps and showers, so a separate hot-water arrangement is needed. Explore our air-conditioning installation, servicing and repairs.
Considering a Vaillant heat pump?
Vaillant’s aroTHERM plus is an air-to-water heat-pump range for home heating and hot water. It can work with suitable radiators or underfloor heating, with a compatible cylinder storing hot water for taps and showers. Tell us if you would like to discuss a Vaillant system for your property.
Heating and hot water, designed together
A complete installation needs more than an outdoor unit. The survey should establish room-by-room heat loss, radiator or underfloor-heating requirements, a suitable outdoor position and space for the indoor equipment. Cylinder capacity should reflect the number of people, bathrooms and your usual hot-water use. Existing radiators and pipework need checking before deciding what can stay.
Controls that respond to your home
Vaillant’s sensoCOMFORT controller uses an outdoor sensor to adjust heating to the weather. With the appropriate myVAILLANT connect gateway and internet connection, the myVaillant app can provide remote temperature and schedule controls, alongside energy-use information. Confirm which controls and connectivity equipment are included in your quotation.
Choose the exact model after the survey
Vaillant lists different heat-pump models and generations, so output, appearance and specifications should be checked against the exact model proposed. Correct sizing and positioning matter more than choosing a unit by the number of bedrooms alone. Noise, access and manufacturer installation requirements are part of the assessment.
Ask for the equipment model, any radiator changes, cylinder, controls, commissioning and manufacturer guarantee terms to be set out clearly. Running costs depend on the property, system design, settings and energy tariff; a product rating is not a promise of a particular bill saving.

Survey, design and installation
Suitability depends on more than the age of your home. Insulation, heat loss, available space, electricity supply, existing heating, access, noise and any relevant permissions all need consideration.
- Tell us about the property. Share your postcode, current heating and what you want to achieve. Photographs or renovation drawings are useful.
- Assess the installation. The survey and design establish heating demand, equipment positions, distribution and hot-water needs.
- Agree the work. Confirm equipment, controls, enabling work, price and installation arrangements in the written proposal. Establish any grant eligibility and application responsibilities before proceeding.
- Install and hand over. Our own team carries out the agreed installation. Confirm commissioning, operating information and ongoing maintenance requirements as part of the installation scope.
If you are extending or renovating, include the heating plans early so equipment, pipe routes and finishes can be considered together. Read about our full-house renovations.
Boiler Upgrade Scheme: what support is available?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides support for eligible installations in England and Wales. Current grants include:
- £7,500 for an eligible air-to-water installation.
- £2,500 for an eligible residential air-to-air installation. Adding air conditioning to a single room does not automatically qualify.
- £9,000 for qualifying air-to-water installations replacing oil or LPG heating in homes without a mains gas connection, under the temporary uplift from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027.
Eligibility depends on the property, existing heating, proposed system and scheme rules. The heat pump must meet the property’s full space-heating demand, and the overall design must meet its hot-water needs. A participating MCS-certified installer applies on the property owner’s behalf; an approved grant is deducted from the installation price.
Confirm eligibility, the installer responsible for the application and any grant deduction in your individual proposal. A grant is not an automatic discount on every installation.
General scheme information checked 28 September 2026. See the current government grant amounts, application process and Ofgem guidance for property owners.
Common questions
Will I need new radiators?
Each radiator needs to be assessed against the room’s heat requirement at the proposed water temperature. Some may be suitable and some may need changing. Air-to-air systems use indoor air units instead of radiators.
Will a heat pump lower my bills?
Running costs depend on the building, system design, controls, energy tariffs and the heating being replaced. Any estimate needs to reflect your property and how you use it.
What happens after installation?
Keep the operating instructions and product documents supplied with your system. Maintenance needs vary by equipment and use, so agree the arrangements for your installation. For questions about completed Torba work, contact us through our aftercare page.
Discuss your heat-pump project
